May Runoff Time

Central and eastern Montana have just experienced one of the driest springs on record! All the Rivers and Streams are cranking up for Spring Runoff. Most of central Montana, Beartooth Mountains, have an average amount of snowpack. But, runoff is expected to be short and fast this year, due to the warm temperatures already. The Bighorn River,however, will be the only real exception to the rule! Due to early warm temps in Wyoming, the drainages for the Bighorn are extremely low. Therefore, experts are predicting extremely low flows all spring and summer long, barring a major weather event.

I have tied up some awesome new patterns for spring fishing on the freestones east of the Divide. These pattterns imitate the March Brown mayfly nymphs, so popular during the early spring on such Rivers as Yellowstone, Stillwater, Boulder, Rock Creek. These flies are really producing! The nymphs are size 16, sparkle March brown, and size 14 and 16 sparkle wire March Brown, all $2 apiece, sold in half dozen or more.
